So why is Return to Oz the most faithful version of the beloved Oz books? Despite the passion and talent involved, the resulting movie was a critical failure, only gaining cult appreciation years later. It took the combined, titanic weight of Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg petitioning together for Disney to bring back Murch after he was fired, to finish the movie. Like its 1939 predecessor, however, production problems plagued the filming process. ![]() It was Murch's first and only directed movie, but with him at the helm and the untapped potential of dipping into the Oz world again, they were very confident that the movie would be a success, and extensively funded it. By the 1980s they owned the rights to all 14 of the original books by Baum, so when they approached prolific film editor Walter Murch ( Apocalypse Now, The Godfather) about what he wanted to work on, and he said he wanted to make an Oz movie they jumped at the chance. Walt Disney Studios had been wanting to revisit the land of Oz for a sequel movie for a while. And this faithfulness to the novels, as well as the nightmarish events on screen, is why this movie is still remembered and talked about to this day. Frank Baum in a way that no other adaptation has done. But, Return to Oz explored a kind of subtle horror, especially meant for young audiences, that mirrored the tone of the original novels written by L. Most of the Oz adaptations, such as Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful or the wildly successful Broadway play Wicked, have maintained the colorful and whimsical approach to the world of Oz that the original 1939 film established, even if they were aimed at adult audiences and got a bit darker in tone. Released in 1985 by Walt Disney Pictures, and starring a young, big-eyed Fairuza Balk in her first ever role, Return to Oz was the first live-action move to revisit the land of Oz since the original 1939 film, and it is by far the darkest and strangest of all the Oz movies before or since. All are turned into ornaments except Dorothy, who is able to get the Scarecrow back and realizes that the Ozians were turned into green ornaments.įurious at this, the Nome King blames Mombi, who previously had locked Dorothy up in her tower and was unable to prevent her from escaping, so he imprisons her in a cage to punish her later, turns into a giant form, and attempts to swallow the others shortly after they find the Gump and Jack. Whenever one of them is turned into an ornament, the Nome King becomes more human in appearance. If they guessed right, he would be restored, but if they guess wrong three times, they would turn into ornaments. The Nome King consoles her and offers to let Dorothy and her companions play a guessing game with each of his ornaments to see which one is the Scarecrow. He tells Dorothy that the emeralds are originally his and that the Scarecrow stole them from him, but she knows he is lying because the emeralds were there before the Scarecrow became king. When Dorothy, Tik-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Gump arrive in the Nome Kingdom, the Nome King transforms the Scarecrow into an ornament. When Dorothy arrives in Oz, he is informed by one of his minions, who reports that a chicken is accompanying Dorothy, making the Nome King furious. Using them, he conquered the Emerald City, turning its inhabitants into stone, with the exception of the Scarecrow, whom he captured.
